Critique Procedures

The group follows Clarion guidelines. Copies of manuscripts can be distributed at one meeting or emailed to members. Distributed copies will then be critiqued at the next meeting. The word count determines the order of critiques--the longest piece goes first.

Oral critiques start with the person sitting to the author’s right. Authors are to remain silent until all critiques are completed. Depending on time constraints and the number of manuscripts scheduled, each critique should last no more than 5 minutes. A moderator is assigned to ensure that time constraints are adhered to. Here are some general guidelines to follow:

Cover letters, poetry, and any length manuscript from flash fiction to novels are acceptable for            critique.

Critiques of novels are broken down by chapter and span multiple meetings. For example,            each chapter of a novel would be critiqued on a different night.

Depending on time constraints, flash fiction (stories under 1,000 words) could be read by the            author and informally critiqued the same night.

No discussion of manuscripts between members before the critique--individual opinions are            highly valued.

Critiques are based solely on the manuscript presented.
